What is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)?
What is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) / Emphysema? Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung condition characterized by long-term inflammation and damage to the airways. This damage restricts airflow in and out of the lungs, a state known as obstruction. It primarily encompasses two conditions: Chronic Bronchitis, where the bronchial tubes become inflamed and produce excess mucus, and Emphysema, where the tiny air sacs (alveoli) are destroyed. The most common cause is long-term exposure to irritants, particularly cigarette smoke, but it can also result from environmental pollutants or genetic factors.
Symptoms
Patients with COPD often struggle with shortness of breath, a persistent "smoker's cough," and frequent respiratory infections. Physically, the inability to breathe easily leads to significant fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, and in advanced stages, weight loss or swelling in the lower extremities. Beyond physical symptoms, patients may experience "exacerbations"—sudden flare-ups where breathing becomes critically difficult for days or weeks. These episodes often lead to hospitalizations and significantly diminish the patient's independence and overall quality of life.
Diagnosis Methods
Diagnosis begins with a thorough review of medical history and exposure to irritants. The primary tool is Spirometry, a lung function test that measures how much and how quickly a patient can exhale. Other tests include Lung Volume and Diffusion tests to evaluate how well oxygen enters the bloodstream. Imaging, such as Chest X-rays or CT scans, is used to visualize lung destruction or rule out heart failure. Additionally, Arterial Blood Gas analysis may be performed to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide levels directly from the blood.
Treatment Methods
The most critical step in treatment is smoking cessation to prevent further lung damage. Pharmacological treatments focus on symptom management, in more severe cases, Oxygen Therapy or Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs (combining exercise and breathing techniques) are vital. For specific advanced cases, surgical interventions like Lung Volume Reduction Surgery or even a Lung Transplant may be considered to improve airflow and lung efficiency.
