What is Hearing Impairment and Sudden Hearing Loss?
Hearing impairment refers to the partial or total inability to hear sounds, which can be conductive (outer/middle ear issues) or sensorineural (inner ear/nerve damage). Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL), often called "sudden deafness," is a medical emergency defined as a rapid loss of at least 30 decibels occurring within 72 hours, usually affecting only one ear.
Impact on Patient
Gradual impairment can lead to social withdrawal, fatigue from "listening effort," and cognitive decline. However, sudden hearing loss is often traumatizing; patients may wake up unable to hear or notice a sudden "pop," frequently accompanied by a feeling of fullness, vertigo, or loud ringing. Without prompt intervention, this loss can become permanent, significantly altering the patient's lifestyle and communication.
Diagnosis Methods
Diagnosis begins with a physical exam to rule out obstructions like earwax. The definitive tool is a Pure Tone Audiometry test, which measures the severity and type of loss across different frequencies. For sudden hearing loss, doctors may also order blood tests or an MRI of the brain and internal auditory canal to rule out underlying causes like viral infections, autoimmune issues, or acoustic neuromas.
Treatment Methods
For chronic impairment, treatments include hearing aids, bone-anchored systems, or cochlear implants. Sudden hearing loss is a race against time; the primary treatment involves high-dose corticosteroids (oral or injected directly through the eardrum) to reduce inflammation. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may also be used as a secondary treatment. The chances of recovery are significantly higher if treatment begins within the first two weeks.

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in one or both ears or inside the head when no external sound source is present. It is often described as a ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling, or clicking noise. Rather than a disease itself, tinnitus is a symptom of an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, ear injury, or a circulatory system disorder.

For many, it leads to significant distress, causing sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and increased anxiety or depression. In severe cases, the constant "phantom noise" can interfere with daily communication and social interactions, profoundly reducing the patient’s overall quality of life and mental well-being.
Diagnosis of Tinnitus
Diagnosis begins with a comprehensive clinical history and a physical examination of the head, neck, and ears. A formal audiogram (hearing test) is essential to check for associated hearing loss. In specific cases, such as pulsatile tinnitus or unilateral symptoms, imaging studies like an MRI or CT scan may be ordered to rule out vascular abnormalities or rare tumors.
Treatment of Tinnitus
Treatment focuses on managing the underlying cause or reducing the perception of the noise. Common strategies include "masking" using white noise machines or hearing aids to drown out the sound. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) help patients habituate to the sound. While there is no "cure-all" pill, addressing stress and avoiding loud noise triggers are vital management steps.
