What is diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease where the blood sugar level is higher than normal. It can be divided into:

- Type 1 diabetes, which is due to failure of body to produce sufficient insulin;

- Type 2 diabetes, which is due to abnormal insulin resistance;

- Gestational diabetes;

- Diabetes caused by drugs, such as taking steroids or psychotropic drugs.

Impact on patients

Diabetes can affect both small and large blood vessels, leading to a variety of complications, which may be fatal. Common complications include cardiovascular diseases (such as ischemic heart disease), cerebrovascular diseases, kidney diseases, retinopathy and neuropathy, etc.

Common diagnostic methods

Blood test: check for fasting blood glucose levels, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c); oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
